Each dog is very different in terms of stomach sensitivity and intolerances, age, fussiness, and general eating habits. It’s important to take some time to think about your dog, their needs, and what proteins would best suit them.

There are times where dog owners believe that their dog is intolerant to a certain protein after eating commercial dog food, however sometimes the allergies will come from the other ingredients that are added to these foods, such as grain or wheat. However, if you know that your dog has allergies to a certain protein, then please avoid these when moving to a raw diet.

Most dogs on a commercial kibble diet usually have no problems when transitioning to raw, however if there are any signs of stomach upset, it may be that you have rushed the process and need to slow it down for them. Each dog is so different, a common-sense approach is required by dog owners during this process.

If your dog is currently on a wet food, we would recommend that this is switched to kibble before starting the transition to raw. This will make the process a lot easier.

There are two options when transitioning your dog to a raw diet, a straight swap, or a gradual weaning process. Some dogs can do a straight swap with no issue, but we would recommend a slow transition over 10-14 days. If your dog isn’t currently eating any form of raw meat, bones, or treats then the transition may take longer as their digestive system will require extra time to adapt. It is important to be guided by your dog and pay attention to their body and behaviours.
